go, go, gowalla.
So, it seems the big news in the land of social media is the release of Gowalla 3. Gowalla, for the uninitiated is a geosocial network and one of Foursquare‘s main rivals. With the release of Facebook Places and Foursquare seemingly doing much better – certainly in terms of press coverage, I, like many others, didn’t hold out much hope for it’s survival.
As of today, that’s all changed.
Gowalla seems to have pulled off a master stroke by recognising that it was fighting a losing battle, and making the inspired move of intergrating with its competitors. As far as I can see, this pretty much makes it a super-geosocial app.
I stopped using Gowalla a couple of months ago; it didn’t seem to be going anyway, I found myself checking in twice – on both Gowalla and Foursquare – but most importantly, no one I knew used it. What I have always thought though is that visually, Gowalla outstripped 4sq with it’s cool, quirky icon design. I also preferred the interface (although it was missing some bits and pieces), particularly the fact that you could take a pic with your mobile cam and post it with your check-in.
It sounds as though Gowalla have gone ahead and basically taken all the good bits from its competitors, mashed everything together and come up with a winning formula. There’s now an integrated stream, so you can see Foursquare and FB Places check-ins in one place, post your location to Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook and Tumblr – and you can even earn Foursquare badges! Love it.
So, I no longer have to check-in on numerous different apps. I can get everything I want on Gowalla, so i’m off to download it again. Right now.
And for all you Androids out there; there’s a version coming for you too in 2011.
